I went to NYC last OCtober. We stayed in the W hotel in Times Square, watched Lion King, went on the SATC tour, went to Pinkberry, went to a bunch of other restaurants. But one thing we didn't do that I wanted to do was go to Serendipity! I heard that's a must!

I'm a Seattle transplant living in NYC's East Village and have to recommend staying downtown if you can (14th st - Houston or Soho area) as Times Square is great, but full of tourists and the businesses that want to attract them. Downtown is there you'll find the 'natives' along with hole-in-the wall shops/restaurants/bars.

Best food: Little Owl (West Village, get there early, the halibut is to die for), Clinton Baking Company (brunch), Cafe Habana (Nolita – amazing Cuban food), Bar Peti (West Village), Caracas (in East Village, tiny place, well worth the wait), Royal (burgers in East Village), Baby Bos Cantina (Murray Hill, best Mexican in the city - bad service, but with a few margs you won't even notice, go there if you want cheese, beans + rice and great guac without the NYC price tag normal Mexican restaurants charge for these simple sides), Little Frankies (East Village, great food and awesome atmosphere – chill celeb spot too), Esperanto (East Village, amazing Pan-American), Barrio Chino (Mexican restaurant & tequila bar – Lower East Side/Chinatown – fancy Mex but really good and natural).

Best dessert: Little Red Hen on the Upper East Side, Sweet Revenge (West Village), Sugar Sweet Sunshine (Lower East Side – get the banana pudding – they also have seasonal pumpkin pudding), Lula's Sweet Apothecary (East Village – homemade vegan ice cream, that’s really good!)

Bars: The Bourgeois Pig (East Village), Little Branch (West Village), Vol de Nuit (hole in the wall Belgium Beer bar in West Village), Lolita (Lower East Side)…I could go on and on.

Hope this helps!

My husband and I are vegetarian and we love going to Red Bamboo and Curlys when we're in the city. The cheesecake at Red Bamboo is the best I've ever had, and I've had my share of cheesecake.

I'm definitely going to check out some of the places Anon. listed when we go in December.

Check craigslist to rent apartments. Feels great to actually go to a real space instead of a hotel when you've been walking all day.

Swanky weird cocktail bar? Death & Co. (6th btw 1st and Ave A)

Yummy family style Italian? Frank (on 2nd ave btw 5th and 6th)

If you like Death and Co check out mayahuel on 6th and 2nd - it's their sister company that's a tequila bar - so cute and mexican inside.

Also, Frank is Lil' Frankies 'parent' restaurant...similar menu but Lil' is more 'hip' and larger. Very similar. Get the panacotta and tiramisu - went tonight - so good!
