handmade quilt : 1

A few months ago somewhere in my brain this little craving started to develop.
I need to make a quilt.
Not your traditional log cabin number. But a modern quilt. Not too modern. Just clean...and with no forest green. Or any color at all for that matter. A clean, cozy gray quilt created from a really great variety of awesome textiles. We're talking non-traditional quilt textiles.
So when you get an itch, scratch it. I'm making a quilt.
.
I have a sewing machine (inherited complete with the hilarious/adorable 70s instructions guide) and have made a few basic things, but for the most part this will be a learn-as-I-go process. So I'm ready to share every step of the way (in hopes that you can give me input - and advice from you sewers!)
.
I've been sketching some possibilities for the layout and will share them soon. In the meantime, "modern quilt" inspiration via flickr...

1. This is definitely one of my favorites. Shall hell freeze over and I let myself use a little color - i think this is the perfect way to do it. via MichelaMaxwell

2. Simple and lovely. via Michela Maxwell

3. Ok, so technically this is the back of a quilt - but I adore it. Love the idea of doing something just a little unique on the inside! via Handmade by Alissa (what a fabulous name!)
..
4. Cute simplicity, definitely keeping this around as inspiration in case this goes well and I want to do something for a future kids room. via Red Pepper Quilts

5. Very cool texture created with layering scraps - I think its too busy for me - but very pretty. Via pwackets

Great idea!! I don't think I'd have the patience for it though!!!

Sounds fun! I like the "too busy" look, but I can't wait to see what you do. :)

When you finish that one, make me one. I'll trade you cello lessons for it.

I love that first one. Very cute...but not in a bad way too cute like quilts can be :)

Best of luck with your quilt. I've never attempted to make one. All the gray toned quilts above are my favorite. I love the dark gray with a burst of color. Makes me want to start sewing a quilt right now!

Just got your note about the Harris Tweed. I purchase mine online from this lovely shop located on the Isle of Harris. http://www.harristweedandknitwear.co.uk/
Just write to Catherine and she can set up an order for you. :)
